2017 Spring Has Sprung Run

Sunday, May 7, marked the 15th Annual Spring Has Sprung 5K run/walk and Kids ½K, hosted by the Lake County Milers Club in Hidden Valley Lake.  It was a perfect day for the family friendly running event which included 199 registrants of all ages.  Jeanine Burnett, the Event Coordinator, proudly summed up her feelings about the race when she said, “It is always fun to see runners and walkers from surrounding communities compete in the Lake County Miler's Spring Has Sprung run.  Giving athletes the opportunity to test their mettle in age categories from 4 to 70 plus is very rewarding”.  The race also benefitted the Track and Cross Country programs at Middletown High School and Kelseyville High School.  Both schools will receive donations of over 1,300 dollars each from the Lake County Milers.

The men’s 5k line-up was led by Lake County Miler, Andre Williams with an impressive time of 17 minutes and 44 seconds (5:43 mile pace).   Andre,

a 15 year old sophomore competes on the  track and cross country at Kelseyville High School.  Finishing as the first overall male, Andre Williams received a free entry into the Santa Rosa Marathon race series with choices spanning the 5K, 10K, Half or Full Marathon distances (a value of $45-$135).  The Santa Rosa Marathon, a sponsor of the Spring Has  Sprung Event, will hold their own event August,  27th.  Go to www.thesantarosamarathon.com to find more information about this event and use our discount codes.   For $20 off the Full or Half Marathon, use code ‘MILERS20’.    To get $10 off the Adult 5K or 10K races, use code ‘MILERS10’.

Just seconds behind Andre, was Justin Perez, age 15, with a time of 18 minutes and 2 seconds (5:49 per mile pace).  Justin is another Kelseyville High sophomore who participates in track and cross country at the school.  It’s kind of amazing when you realize that their competition runs even into the classroom, where both of them excel as honor students with a 4.25 average!  After receiving his 2nd place medal, Justin, perhaps feeling a little extra motivational burn, set the stage for a future rematch when he vowed to take first next year’s race.   Bringing in the third overall winner spot, was Narciso Avina, age 26 of Napa with a finishing time of 18 minutes 9 seconds (5:51 pace).

17 year old Yareli Lozano of Kelseyville was the first woman to cross the finish line with a time of 22 minutes, 18 seconds (7:11 pace) and also received a free entry into the very popular Santa Rosa Marathon race series.  Anna Uher, age 30 and a Lake County Miler from Lower Lake finished second with a time of 23 minutes and 1 second and Stephanie Diehl finished third with a time of 24 minutes and 16 seconds.  Stephanie is a member of the ‘Dedicated Duo’ team that led the exercise warm ups that the crowd delighted in leading up to the race.  Just before the warm ups, she expressed her enthusiasm for the event remarking that, “It’s something that a lot of us look forward to every year!”

Before the 5K start at 8:30 AM, young runners had their chance to test their mettle with the popular ½ K (ages 4-5) and 1K (ages 6-9).  The participating kids were awarded finishing medals as they crossed the finish line.
